Celebrity Golf Tourney Held at Morongo Club

Actors and sports legends were among the more than 275 golfers who gathered at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon on Dec. 6 for the annual Christmas Cheer All Year Celebrity Golf Tournament which will help provide 3,000 disadvantaged children from across the region with a holiday shopping spree this year.

For the fourth year in the row, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians is serving as title sponsor of the shopping spree organized and founded by longtime Fox 11 News journalist Rick Lozano. Morongo provided more than $100,000 in cash and services in support of the fundraising tournament and upcoming Christmas Cheer All Year shopping spree.

“Thanks to Rick and his group, thousands of children who would have gone without a present this holiday will instead get to select the toys of their choice at the upcoming shopping spree,” said Morongo Tribal Chairman Robert Martin.

Golf players included actor Esai Morales, former Los Angeles Dodger pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Ricky Nolasco, former Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher and World Series champion Troy Percival, former Olympic gold medalist boxer Henry Tillman, and Carlos Palomino, a former WBC welterweight champion and a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

A local nonprofit organization selected children for the shopping event, including 500 from the San Gorgonio Pass and dozens of foster children under the care of Riverside County’s Child Protective Services.

The tournament and shopping event are just two of many events that Morongo supports to help strengthen local communities and families. The tribe contributes more than $1 million annually to support communities and nonprofit organizations in Southern California.
